AIP Diet App: Compare Autoimmune Protocol Tools

Short answer: An AIP diet app should help you check foods, plan meals and track reintroduction without pushing permanent restriction. Evidence for the autoimmune protocol is limited to small studies, so treat any app as an organiser, not a treatment. Nutrition.io offers a free food checker, a free assessment and an optional meal-plan report.

Free tool: AIP, low-FODMAP and Hashimoto's food checker — check any food against AIP, low-FODMAP and Hashimoto's side by side.

Medical disclaimer: The autoimmune protocol is restrictive and does not replace treatment for autoimmune disease. Do not stop prescribed medication. Talk to your clinician before starting, especially if you are pregnant, underweight, have a history of disordered eating, or experience worsening symptoms.

What the evidence shows

The AIP removes grains, legumes, dairy, eggs, nuts, seeds, nightshades and additives during elimination, then reintroduces foods one by one. Research is small and uncontrolled. A pilot study in 16 women with Hashimoto's reported improved quality-of-life scores within a supported 10-week programme, with no significant change in thyroid function or antibodies (Abbott et al., 2019). A small study in inflammatory bowel disease reported clinical improvements in 15 adults (Konijeti et al., 2017).

Neither study had a control group, so results cannot prove the diet caused the change. Meanwhile, a broader review of nutritional interventions in Hashimoto's found heterogeneous, limited evidence (Osowiecka and Myszkowska-Ryciak, 2023). An honest AIP app reflects that uncertainty. The full protocol is explained in our AIP diet guide, with foods in the AIP food list.

The AIP app buying checklist

1. Does it plan reintroduction, not just elimination?

Elimination is meant to be temporary. A good tool records which food you reintroduced, when, and what happened.

2. Does it watch nutrient gaps?

Removing whole food groups can reduce calcium, fibre and other nutrients. A nutrient tracker helps you see gaps a simple yes/no list misses.

3. Can it build real meals?

A list of allowed foods does not tell you what to cook. Nutrition.io's report creates a seven-day menu, shopping list and 30-day actions from your stated pattern and avoided foods. Check every ingredient, because the menu is not certified AIP-compliant.

4. What does it cost?

The food checker and assessment score are free. The optional report is $9.99 USD once, with tax and final total shown before checkout. The mobile app is separate.

5. Is any clinical review claim narrow and visible?

Nutrition.io's signed calculation-method review covers specified methods only, dated October 7, 2026. This guide and individual generated plans are not individually reviewed.

When another option is better

If you have Hashimoto's and want thyroid-specific tools, compare the Hashimoto's diet app guide. If gut symptoms dominate, see low FODMAP apps. Our Hashimoto's hub links the thyroid references.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a free AIP app?

Nutrition.io's AIP food checker and assessment score are free. Many dedicated AIP recipe apps charge a subscription.

How long should elimination last?

Most AIP programmes describe roughly 30 to 90 days before reintroduction, but evidence for any specific length is limited. Discuss timing with your clinician.

Will AIP lower my thyroid antibodies?

Current evidence does not show that. The pilot study in Hashimoto's found no significant antibody change.

Key takeaways

  1. AIP evidence is small and uncontrolled; treat apps as organisers.
  2. Choose tools that support reintroduction and nutrient monitoring.
  3. Check ingredients yourself; no generated menu is a certification.
  4. Start with the free checker and score before paying.
