What nutrition can and cannot do

Cannot: lower TSH-receptor antibodies, replace antithyroid medication, or cure the disease.

Can: prevent the muscle and bone loss caused by excess thyroid hormone, correct the deficiencies that a raised metabolic rate creates, reduce symptom-amplifying inputs like caffeine and alcohol, provide selenium at the dose studied in mild eye disease, and manage the weight rebound that follows treatment.

Selenium and thyroid eye disease

The European Group on Graves' Orbitopathy ran a randomised, placebo-controlled trial of selenium 100 µg twice daily (200 µg total) for six months in patients with mild, active orbitopathy. Selenium improved quality of life, reduced eye involvement, and slowed progression compared with placebo.

Untreated Graves' raises resting energy expenditure by roughly 15–30%, and the shortfall is met by breaking down muscle protein.
